y A truly welcoming
guest room lets visitors kick off their shoes
and not worry about messing up fussy
decorating. The beach house feel of this
room invites them to do just that. None of
the furniture is too pricey and all of it has a
slightly worn look, so a few new nicks and
scratches won’t harm it. Horizontal plank
walls make the small room seem bigger.
Merlot-colored table lamps pick up the red
in the striped bedskirt and pillows.
1
PAST THE HORIZON
Horizontal plank walls
were installed unfinished
side out. Painting over the
rough texture gives the
wall color a pleasing
“washed” finish.
2
FRAME WORK
Inexpensive botanical
prints framed in black
match the cane head-
board. The wide grid
placement fills the wall.
3 THE RIGHT STRIPE
A striped fabric is a
versatile choice. The
multitude of colors gives
you a range to work with,
making it easy to switch
bedding by season.
4
DOUBLE UP
Twin bedside tables with
drawers and a shelf offer
storage. Mismatched
furniture, including the
antique scalloped bench,
reinforces the informality
of the room.
5
UNDER FOOT
The poplar floors were
painted creamy white
instead of stained to
match the home’s
historical look.
